The Storm / Still series is an exploration of the influence of place on my mental state. 2015 was a troubling year. The near loss of a beloved family member due to mental illness was devastating. It was almost unbearable but as I sat on a small rocky beach in Dunure, Scotland I felt all my anxieties, all my exhaustion, all my sorrow flow away from me. In that place I found peace and the strength to go on.
I created a colour family based on the slate grey pebbles, the muddy grey rocks and the golden yellow lichen. And a set of printed textiles with mostly linear marks. Some were pale and gentle; they embodied stillness. Others were dark, muddy and difficult to like; these seemed to represent turmoil and unrest. My inner storm.
